In a surprising discovery in 2002, TF instruments demonstrated that the URT is applicable to the diagnosis of human diseases: ultrasonic measurements using body fluids of patients suffering from various neurological diseases and of healthy individuals revealed distinct differences between the various samples.

Recent scientific insight into the molecular basis of several neurodegenerative disorders and other diseases points to the assumption, that misfolding and aggregation of specific proteins may be a fundamental pathological mechanism for the development of these diseases. Misfolding and aggregation of so-called amyloidogenic proteins finally leads to insoluble deposits creating cell death. This final step is preceeded by similar processes in body fluids including blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. As the early detection of misfolding and aggregation requires high resolution instrumentation the ResoScan® System represents an ideal solution to reveal biochemical changes long before the clinical appearance of the disease.

Evaluation of Ultrasonic Resonator Technology as a diagnostic technique was initiated with the Neurological Clinic of the University of Göttingen. The results showed that URT can distinguish between patients with various neurological diseases and healthy controls. More extensive tests were conducted at the Central Institute for Mental Health in Mannheim. These tests also demonstrated the ability of URT to differentiate at an early stage of the disease. Following this, a collaborative effort was established with the Leonard Berg Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center of the Washington University Medical School in St. Louis. The results reinforced earlier studies and have been presented to the medical community.

The latest evaluatuon was enthusiastically received when recently presented to the medical community and have resulted in plans for broadened studies. TF Instruments’ recent developments in the field of early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease were awarded at the 37th Annual Oak Ridge Conference (Press release). A longer term goal of TF Instruments is to provide a routine, reliable test for neurodegenerative diseases.
